There are so many things you can do to secure your home and your family. If you add in a few extra measures, you can significantly improve the security of your home. In this article, we’ll discuss a helpful way to keep your home safe through something as simple as your door, specifically if you have a screen door.

While many intruders come in through windows, 70% of them come in through a door. Whether it’s a patio door, front door, or garage door, it is pertinent that you secure these doors to the best of your ability. And fortunately, thanks to advancements in technology and home automation, it’s now easier than ever to implement door security. For now, let’s take a close look at screen doors that maintain strong home security.

What are home security screen doors?

A good door for your home is generally heavier than most standard doors. It is designed to help keep burglars from being able to break in, and all your exterior doors would ideally be security doors. It is also important that your security doors be windowless, as this gives intruders optimal opportunity to bypass their strength to break the glass and enter in through the window opening. The most important part of these doors is having a deadbolt.

The three primary features to make sure your home security screen door provides are:

  • A strong frame

  • Heavy-duty keyed locks

  • Non-removable pin hinges

What types of home security screen doors are there?

A home security screen door will be made from:

  • Steel

  • Aluminum

  • Metal alloy

  • Any combination of these materials

All these materials can be made strong enough to ensure the screen door operates as a security door. If you opt for an aluminum or metal alloy security door, though, it will have to be wider than the standard door because these materials are weaker than steel. In fact, a steel security door only needs to be two to three inches thicker. An aluminum or metal alloy door will need to be almost six inches wide. It’s also important to understand that if you opt for an aluminum door, this type of material tends to be extremely rust-resistance, but because of this, it also tends to be the most expensive. Steel doors, on the other hand, are less expensive, and if they are properly powder coated, they will provide rust-resistance for up to 8-10 years.

How much do home security screen doors cost?

There are going to be several factors that influence the cost of this type of screen door. These factors usually include:

  • The size of the screen

  • The materials used

  • Style of door

  • Lock type

Generally, security screen doors are going to start out around $700; this is for an extremely simple and basic screen door. Higher quality screen doors are going to cost upward of $1,500. While this can be on the pricier side, it is a one-time payment for long-term security.
